This book started out slow, then it started to grow (haha, Grinch references). At first I thought it was just a copy of In the After, but although it had the same apocalyptic theme of aliens, that is where the comparisons ended.
This book uses Rick Riordan's method of toggling the first person point of view back and forth between different characters, but I did not realize that until I had read five pages from a different character. Keep that in mind when you read the book, because that transition is between a girl and a boy and they do NOT have the same characteristics, it may leave you very confused.
The main characters, for the most part, are: Cassie, Evan, and Ben. They all begin at very different places in the book, and finally unite in a way that I will not spoil. When the aliens came, many thought they would be friendly, and that humans would have so much to learn from them that they did not yet know. I am sure you know what I am going to say next...they were wrong. The aliens attacked the humans in what they refer to as The Waves. These Waves gradually decimate the human population to nothing, and this book, as it is probably obvious by now, is about the Fifth Wave.
This book I give a 9/10, mostly because it had some very unnecessary cursing in it (you will know what I mean if you read the book). In fact, this book really was hindered by its language, I think it had so much more to prove if it were not for this. I will say, however, it did not have sexual content like most books today have. In fact, for the most part, it just had really small moments of cuddling (as a guy, I could have gone without that, but one thing at a time).
There are rumors circulating that this book will make its adulthood, which I am thrilled to hear, it will make a great movie. One thing I would like to add...do I know how to pick them or what? Every single one I pick seems to become a movie, except for some certain poems I will not bother mentioning (uh-hum The Bells).
