2012 Election race heats up
Democrat and Republican go head to head again in November
Romney and Obama have appeared for three presidential debates and campaigned across the country.
The debates have certainly retained their name. Beginning with answering questions, both debates have escalated into what no one wants: just arguing.
The first presidential debate was handed to Mitt Romney according to CBS news polls. His clever come backs and knowledge of America out did the president, who could be found interested in his shoes on several occasions.
However, after the second presidential debate, people were less enthusiastic about the candidates. A presidential debate should be “Two grown people debating in an intellectual way about current issues,” said government teacher Jeff Moore. Instead, Moore thought that the debates so far have been “Elementary….and childish.”
The second presidential debate was very heated. Interruptions, exceeding time limits, and even arguments over whose turn it was were normal. This time, both presidential candidates came off as unlikable, not providing each other with the proper respect. In fact, while Romney was talking about his five point plan for America, Obama could be seen smirking. When Romney said that he would crack down on China like the president had failed to do, Obama responded with, “Governor, you’re the last person who’s going to get tough on China!”
Romney repeatedly argued with the moderator about whether it was his turn or not. He also told Obama to be quiet because he was “still speaking.” Additionally, he refused to sit down when it was the president’s turn to talk or answer a question.
There were many victories for Romney, though. Whenever a person would rise to ask a question to Romney, he would make sure that he knew the person’s name. This made him appear friendly. On the other hand, whenever the president would get up to follow Romney, he would address the person with a stern look. Also, Romney continuously stated that he had run small businesses and been a governor whom always had a balanced budget. Therefore, Romney knows what it takes to get the economy going again. Finally, he pointed out that since Obama did not carry out the promises he made in 2008, why should he keep the promises he made this year? Romney said, “[Obama is] great as a speaker… but he has a record to show.”
However, Obama also did a good job in the debate as well. While Romney wants to enforce gasoline and oil, which has been America’s problem for decades, Obama says he will kick in independent energy, and clean oil and natural gas. America needs renewable energy before it has a crisis, and Obama says he will make that happen. When a man asked what Obama would do to make him vote since he now was not as enthusiastic as he was in 2008, Obama made several fair points. He has gotten rid of Osama Bin Laden, the terrorist mastermind behind 9/11 and other terrorist attacks across the globe. He has also cut down on terrorism in general and ended several wars the US has been tangled in.
So, the front-runner cannot be decided at this time. People like Moore say that the reason the US is not getting as many polls or votes as usual is because not as much people think it is even worth it because of the presidential candidates.
The vice presidential debate was a huge let down for the Democratic Party as well. As Joe Biden, Obama’s vice presidential candidate, rambled on and came off as rude and disrespectful. Paul Ryan, Romney’s vice presidential candidate, was very intelligent and fast with his remarks and won the vice presidential debate hands down. This vice presidential debate will be the only one throughout the campaign.
The public vote for our next president occurs on November 6, 2012. The three presidential debates that have taken place so far will help the undecided voters pick their candidate. After the voting has finished, then it is up to the Electoral College to decide who the next president of the United States of America will be; the most powerful country in the world.
