After High School
What seniors do after High School
The high school experience is one of the most influential in a person’s life, and also the one that prepares teenagers for the rest of their lives. One thing about leaving high school is how many new experiences are presented. Some of the many opportunities are college, getting a job, and going on vacation. For Senior Angela Blain, these are all perspective choices.
“I’m off [of school] for a summer, then I’m getting a bachelor’s degree in nursing at UCM,” Blain said. A lot of seniors, like Blain, want to get out of their parents’ house and get a place of their own after high school.
One vacation site for some students may involve cruises to vacation destinations. Algebra and Geometry teacher Gina Prowell had her high school and childhood experience in Hawaii. She went to Punahou School in Honolulu. Although she lived in one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, she wanted to go to an out-of-state college so that she could leave.
“I just wanted to leave the state, but now I wish I could go back [on a trip],” Prowell said. Prowell knew from her freshman year that she wanted to teach.
Once high school is over for Ray-Pec’s class of ’13, colleges all over the country will get some incredible students from Ray-Pec. One of the options while going to college is to work, which can help with paying tuition or having entertainment once in a while. However, getting a job is not so easy.
“I needed my parents to network for me for my first job,” Prowell said. While networking may not always be necessary, an average person may go through several job interviews before actually being hired.
One of the classes that the school provides to get used to working part-time before going full-time is COE, which allows students to leave school early in order to work at a job. Not only will this help develop interviewing skills, but this will also help bring in a little extra money to help with college or your graduation vacation.
One thing that the graduating seniors cannot forget is to be brave and take on new experiences when they present themselves. This is key, whether it be at a job interview or getting a scholarship.
“Don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from embarking on a new adventure. It might be scary at first but it will be fun, too,” Prowell said.
Now that the high school experience has prepared the seniors, they are ready to begin in the work-place or to continue school by heading to college. Hopefully whichever path they choose will be full of opportunity and enjoyment.
